During this tour you will visit the famous area
called Punjab and situated in northwestern India.
Sutlej and Beas are the main rivers of the state.
Punjab can be geographically divided into two regions:
the low hills of Shivalik in the north and the plain
between Sutlej and Ghaggar Rivers.
The world famous Dharamshala is a popular hill
station located in the Kangra district known for
its idyllic surroundings amidst pine trees, tea
gardens and snow capped mountains. It is also
home to His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. The word
Dharamshala means, an inn attached to a temple.
The Hindu inhabitants of the region are the Gaddis
who worship Shiva and Durga. Dharamshala was developed
as a summer retreat for the British and their
troops, who had seized control of the town in
1848. It later became the administrative capital
of Kangra in 1852. However, its days of glory
were short lived, as the town suffered a serious
setback and the loss of many lives with the earthquake
of 1905.
You will also visit a popular tourist destination
situated on the national highway that leads to
Leh, called Manali and which is also the gateway
to the remote and desolate valleys of Lahaul and
Spiti. Today, much of the main town centre, which
is based around its bus terminal, is a hotchpotch
of thoughtless construction, an overcrowded bazaar
and much like any other popular destination. However,
pack a rucksack, venture out a little into the
countryside and you see all of its natural charm
in abundance - the beautiful Beas river, ancient
temples, hot water springs. Lahual and Spiti,
are twin valleys situated on the north eastern
extremity of Himachal Pradesh, bordering Tibet.
Rugged mountains and white snow peaks add to Lahaul's
barren yet spellbinding beauty. Lying at an altitude
of 2,745 m, Lahual offers endless treks for adventure
enthusiasts, earning it the reputation of being
the ultimate trekking destination. The valley
is also famous for its Buddhist monasteries.
